The ideal route for lovers of typical Ammerland pasture landscape and wide fen landscape! It goes through the lovely Westerstederfeld and Aperfeld to the Aper Tief and through Südgeorgsfehn and Lengener Moor back to Westerstede.

The approximately 52-kilometre route leads from the Ammerland park landscape into the East Frisian fen landscape. The stretches through Westerstederfeld and Ihorst offer the unique enjoyment of long, beautiful oak avenues and open wide views into the typical pasture landscape. At the Aper Tief and along the Südgeorgsfehn canal, the landscape opens up. Like pearls on a string, the farmhouses line up along the fen canals, and on the tour, you pass through sparsely populated green residential streets, moor meadows, peat cutter fields and canals. The canals were formerly used to transport the excavated peat. The beautifully arranged bathing lake in Großsander offers a nice spot for a break.

Highlights RIGHT AND LEFT OF THE ROUTE

  • The Aper Tief nature reserve is the largest tidal watercourse in Ammerland with direct access to the North Sea. This wetland and flood area, newly created in Hengstforde in 2005, fascinates with its daily changing features.
  • In 1993, the new Staaßen Bridge in Augustfehn over the Aper Tief was built as a connection between Augustfehn and Nordloh. The previous old Staaßen Bridge, named after Christian Staaßen who worked as a bridge keeper from 1911 to 1945, was moved to the Augustfehn canal. It is the only preserved bascule bridge in the municipality.
  • The Südgeorgsfehn canal was already created by muscular power around 1829. This artificially created canal drained the moors from the direction of Deternerlehe and Südgeorgsfehn.
  • Großsander bathing lake: The leisure facility in Großsander is located on a 16-hectare lake and offers, in addition to swimming opportunities, also pedal boating.
