This stage takes you through the following towns:
Uplengen
On the map, the Fehn canals are often only visible as fine blue lines. However, during the ride through the municipality of Uplengen, the Nordgeorgsfehnkanal accompanies the cyclist almost continuously for nearly 30 kilometers. Around the turn of the century, this canal, which connects the Ems-Jade Canal with the Jümme river on its long route from Wiesmoor to Stickhausen, was an important transport route for peat, building materials, and all other goods needed in the moor colonies.
Apen / Augustfehn
Borders have become almost insignificant in our European age. This was not so in earlier times. Because your village was only about a half-hour walk from the Oldenburg-East Frisian border, residents of Apen regularly found themselves in serious trouble over the past centuries when Oldenburgers and East Frisians once again settled their disputes with swords, halberds, and muskets.
Barßel
Water is the defining element of the vast lowland landscape at the Soeste river. The immediate proximity to navigable rivers and canals has therefore decisively shaped the development of the municipality of Barßel for centuries. Even today, far inland, the maritime past is everywhere present here. You sense it on the leisure boats in the marina, at the memorials in the seafaring town of Barßel, and during the annual harbor festival.
