The city of Oldenburg is a worthwhile destination for cyclists. Top cultural attractions include the Oldenburg Castle, the Museum of Nature and Man, the art galleries in the Prinzenpalais and Augusteum as well as the Horst Janssen Museum.
The only 17-kilometer-long path from Bad Zwischenahn to the Oldenburg city center is shaped by the railway embankment, with the cycle path mostly running on its right side. A place to cool off on summer days is the romantically situated Woldsee, passed halfway along the route. The return route goes through the Fehn settlements of Petersfehn.
Highlights RIGHT AND LEFT OF THE ROUTE
- The Woldsee was created in the 1970s when sand was needed for the construction of the A28 motorway. In some places, the approximately 14-hectare lake is as deep as 13 meters; in comparison, the Zwischenahner Meer is only up to 5.5 meters deep.
- Oldenburg Castle houses the State Museum for Art and Cultural History Oldenburg and is a landmark of the city. As the former residence of the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg, it has a long history. The medieval castle complex was expanded in the Renaissance style into a representative residence.
- The State Museum Nature and Man Oldenburg is a regionally important collection museum with departments for archaeology, natural history, and ethnology. Focus areas are geology and moor archaeology of northwest Germany. The moor corpse from the Kayhauser Moor is also exhibited here (see Moor route).
- The open-air museum Bad Zwischenahn was built in 1909 and 1910 from two former half-timbered houses. The local heritage association shows how people lived here 300 years ago. The 17 houses and outbuildings harmoniously integrate into the spa park; the heart is the farmhouse with an open fireplace (audio station at the old farmhouse).
