Aper Fehngebiet

The tour, which is around 52 kilometers long, leads from the Ammerland park landscape to the East Frisian fen landscape. The routes through Westerstederfeld and Ihorst offer the unique enjoyment of long, beautiful oak avenues and open wide views of the typical pasture landscape. The landscape opens up at Aper Tief and along the Südgeorgsfehn Canal. The farmhouses along the Fehn canals line up like pearls on a chain and you leave sparsely populated green residential streets, moor meadows, peat cutters and canals behind on the tour. The canals used to be used to remove the peat that was extracted. The beautifully prepared swimming lake in Großsander is ideal for a short break.

Highlights RIGHT AND LEFT OF THE ROUTE

• The Aper Tief nature reserve is the largest tidal watercourse in the Ammerland with direct access to the North Sea. This wetland and floodplain, newly created in Hengstforde in 2005, fascinates with its peculiarities that change every day.
• In 1993 the new Augustfehn Staaßenbrücke was built over the Aper Tief as a connection between Augustfehn and Nordloh. The previous old Staaßenbrücke, named after Christian Staaßen, who worked as a bridge keeper from 1911 to 1945, was converted into the Augustfehn Canal. It is the only remaining bascule bridge in the municipality.
• The Südgeorgsfehnkanal was created as early as 1829 using muscle power. The moors from the direction of Deternerlehe and Südgeorgsfehn were drained through this artificially created canal.
• Großsander swimming lake: The leisure facility in Großsander is located on a 16-hectare lake and offers swimming opportunities as well as pedal boating
