Discovery journey to six different mills

The Ammerland landscape has always been shaped by windmills and watermills. At the peak of the mills around the turn of the 19th to 20th century, there were 47 mills, of which nine are still operational and open to visitors today. The 47-kilometre route leads to six Ammerland mills, which have been preserved for posterity with great volunteer commitment. The route runs through beautiful moorland and pasture land with varied and winding sections and is almost entirely paved.

Highlights ON THE RIGHT AND LEFT OF THE ROUTE

The highlights on the route are the eponymous mills.

  • At the windmill in the open-air museum in Bad Zwischenahn, it is a two-storey gallery Dutch mill. It dates from 1811.
  • The Ekerner mill is also a two-storey gallery Dutch mill.
  • Querensteder mill: This mill is a three-storey gallery Dutch mill with a wind rose. The wind rose automatically turns the mill cap into the wind.
  • The Wallholländer Westerscheps was built in 1888. Initially, milling was done with wind power. In 1908, the milling process was additionally powered by a steam engine.
  • The first gallery Dutch windmill Westerscheps was built in 1799 but burned down in 1827. A new mill was built on this site in 1830.
  • The Howiek watermill was built in 1608. Noticeable is the half-timbered construction with reed and tile roof. The drive was via an undershot water wheel.
