Augustfehn Canal & towpath

Today the Augustfehn Canal is no longer navigable. It was renovated in 1999 and its width reduced. Since then it has been subject to the tide. In the course of the renovation, a footpath was laid out to remind of the former towpath.
For the industrial site of Augustfehn, the good transport connections via the water were advantageous: there was a connection to the sea via the canal, Aper Tief and Leda. The peat used to be transported on flat-bottomed ships. These "Pünten" were non-motorized and were pulled over the water by hand from a towpath.
